How We Worked It Out
We took the Census Bureau Gazetteer point for every incorporated city, town and village in Tennessee and found the westernmost, easternmost, northernmost and southernmost. Distances use the great-circle formula between those points. This is our own arithmetic on Census data, marked derived; it is not a driving distance and not a state boundary measurement.
| Direction | Place | Latitude, Longitude |
|---|---|---|
| West | Memphis | 35.109, -89.969 |
| East | Mountain City | 36.470, -81.805 |
| North | Mitchellville | 36.634, -86.540 |
| South | Lookout Mountain | 34.994, -85.352 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why not give a driving time across the state?
We hold no sourced end-to-end drive time. The drive-times file covers specific routes from OpenStreetMap road routing, no live traffic.
Are these the state's official extremes?
No. The Gazetteer lists incorporated places only; unincorporated communities or the state boundary itself may extend further.
What We Could Not Confirm
- The state’s own published east-west and north-south distances: not confirmed; we found no official page that states them.
