What a National Historic Landmark Is
National Historic Landmarks are places the Secretary of the Interior designates as nationally significant in American history. The National Park Service runs the program. A landmark can be privately owned, so being on this list does not mean it is open; the Open to visitors column says what the owner’s or the National Park Service’s page states.
What We Could Not Verify
- Sources disagree on the landmark count: the National Park Service list by state gives Tennessee 32 National Historic Landmarks, while the NPS Tennessee state page and the Tennessee Historical Commission say 31. We list the 32.
- Some former websites for Tennessee history places and events, including the old Alex Haley Museum, Exchange Place and Secret City Festival sites, now show for-sale or unrelated pages. We link the official state or operator pages instead, or leave the place unlinked.
We re-check these when the source pages change. Spot something we missed? Use the corrections page.
Frequently Asked Questions

(source: List of NHLs by State (National Park Service)).
What is the newest National Historic Landmark in Tennessee?
